I want to plant a Live Oak, but don't know if it'll do well in the area in which I want to plant it. The area is sloped, so the area in which I will plant it is at the bottom of the slope and tends to get a lot of water. Sometimes if we've had too much rain in a short period of time, it will actually puddle. Will a Live Oak do well knowing that it will get much, if not too much, water. If a Live Oak will not do well, please feel free to share your suggestions on what would do well. I live in Mansfield, Texas zone 8 and I would like the tree to grow to be quite large. There are no obstacles that will get in the way of this tree growing, so size at maturity is not an issue. Thanks!!!
bryanclo, Here is what http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quercus_virginiana says: "Southern live oak can grow in moist to dry sites. They can withstand occasional floods ... Although they grow best in well-drained sandy soils and loams, they will also grow in clay ... Care for the southern live oak is very easy, as it requires very little watering while it is young. After it is four to five feet tall, watering can be forgotten, and no more care is required." It will not survive constant saturation, though. So consider your growing conditions again, check your soil, and decide for yourself.
