My mom got a peace lily as a gift and it's leaves are turning yellow and dying. How to you properly care for this houseplant?

they like the soil that is well draining yet can be kept moist...not soggy, just moist and evenly so. they do not need direct lighting - do best on the far side of the room from the window if they are in a southern or western exposure. eastern exposure they can deal with the light for an hour or so as it's not too strong first thing in the morning and northern lighting the same - the late afternoon/setting sun isn't too strong and an hour of it won't hurt.

if the plant wasn't repotted, i'd suggest doing that. use cactus soil with some extra perlite added in...will drain well yet stay a bit moist. also, if it's in too bright a lighting situation, move it to a location with lower lighting. also make sure the container has drainage holes...too much water held in the soil will rot the roots.

basically, they are easy care (even if it doesn't seem like it at the moment, lol). once in the right soil and lighting, all you need to do is water them well when they *just* start to get droopy.

oh, one other thing, always allow the water to stand overnight before using on the plants...excess chlorine will have a chance to dissipate and the water will be at room temp (and then won't shock the roots by being too cold or too warm).
