I am moving to a new house on Dec 15th, and I am wondering how to move my perenials, including hostas, cannon lillys, bleeding hearts, and a peoney. I live in the Peterborough Ontario area.
    Any advice?

You may be able to dig clumps of the hosta, and replant in a large planter; then keep this planter in an unheated area throughout the winter. In the spring put the plant into the ground. The bulbs can be stored in sawdust over the winter and replanted in the spring.
The peonie is not likely to want to be disturbed but you may treat it as you did for the hosta. It may not want to bloom in the next 2 years, transplanting will stress it a great deal.

    Hello Tore,

Perhaps not the ideal time to move plants, but they should do OK. It is definately worth trying. Basically just dig the plants up and move them to the new location. If they are dense you can divide them into a few plants, while you are at it. If you can dig them up the same day or day before, that would be best. But the timing may not be so easy; I am sure you have other things to deal with. If you have to dig them up ahead of time and hold them before planting, try to keep the roots and soil intact as much as possible and plant them in pots for the wait. Either way don't let the roots dry out.

    Good luck!
