Hello, this is my first time on this website… I am hoping to get some information on moving a large red grape vine. I have no idea how to go about moving it. My friend is levelling her back yard I want the vine, I’m not sure how old it is, over 5 at least I believe, it has a trunk of about 3 inches, spring has sprung and there is growth of about 2 inch sprouts… How do I go about moving it? How far down would I need to go? I know it is better to wait until fall, but that might not be possible. Anyone have any ideas?

Have you pulled it out yet?

I'd say go to a box store, buy a bag or two of generic top soil and some grass seed. Then go over and remove the vine and a seemingly too large portion of the dirt around it so you get all the roots you can. With a shovel I'd see how may roots I find going deep. Maybe 2 feet or so will probably have to do for a removal by hand job. I don't BELIEVE these have large tap roots when young.

Then backfill with a couple $2 40lb bags of dirt and sprinkle the grass seed down to keep your friend happy.

Once you're home plant your grape vine in a similar location and water it daily for a week or so then whenever the root ball area is dry for awhile.
