I broke a branch on my espalier apple tree last year, this year it is doing great with lots of blossoms.
Should I just keep it zap strapped or is there some kind of mending compound?

There are some mending compounds -- as I understand it, they are basically just sealants -- but I think they are meant to be applied as soon as the break happens, with a goal of sealing out microbes and insects that might introduce infection into the plant tissue. Now that a year or so has passed, and the tree is doing okay, I'd say it's probably best to let the tree continue to heal in its own way.

I'd keep the strapping in place, to provide structural support.

I've had good luck with wrapping small branches (finger size) tightly with electrical tape.
