Hi, I have a group of callas (white with yellow inside) that have expanded enormously! I have cut them down for winter and they have already started to sprout their little heads from the ground. I want to separate some of them and plant them in the bed across the path. What month is a good time? And when I dig them up, how do I separate? should I be weary of frost after they've been re-planted. (I'm in zone 6b). thank you :)
You should have done that in the fall, as they were going dormant. If you don't have frost in the ground now, you should be able to dig them up and separate them, then replant and mulch them over to keep them safe from the frost in the air. Otherwise, wait another year, and dig them up in the fall when they go dormant. To separate, check first the state of the tubers. If it's one big one, you need to cut it with a clean knife, and if it's many small ones, you can gently pull them apart. If you have to cut a tuber, allow it to callous over in your coldroom before you plant to avoid rot.
Oh darn. thanks though, Lorax. One more question (to anyone, of course) what if I dig them up and plant them in pots and keep them in the greenhouse until spring? could I do that?
Another questin: when I dig them up, should I let them dry out (even if I didn't cut them) before replanting them?
