I recently received a house plant and I have no clue how to care for it. I'd like to know what kinda of plant(s) I have and the best way to care for it. Especially considering that its not doing to well at the moment. Any help would be grateful.
Well, there are three plants in there. For certain, the tall one with the narrow leaves is Dracaena sanderiana, and the tall one next to it is a tropical Hibiscus (H. rosa-sinensis), which cultivar we can't tell you without seeing it in bloom. The little one in front of the Dracanea, I don't recognize. Your main problem is that these plants all have different water and light requirements. To help them, the first step will be to separate them and repot them into their own pots (make sure these have drainage holes!) The Dracaena needs partial sun and should be watered when the soil is dry to the depth of your first knuckle. The Hibiscus needs full sun and should be watered when the soil is dry to the depth of your second knuckle. Hopefully somebody else can ID the third plant and tell you what it needs. And for the love of the plants, don't put those stones back on the surface of the soil! The problem you have right now is that the Hibiscus and the little plant are drowning (D. sanderiana is remarkably water tolerant and you can actually grow it in a vase with water; this is how it's often sold, as ''Lucky Bamboo.")
Ditto what lorax said: get those plants outta there!!! I suspect that the tall one next to the Dracaena might be an Ardisia. I further suspect that the small plant in L. foreground is a Dieffenbachia.
i agree with togata; i think the little one might be dieffenbachia (bright, indirect light). yes! seperate them NOW, mrgreenthumbs! always beware of buying houseplants together in one planter; they almost always have different requirements. know what bugs me? how around christmas grocery stores sell all these plants covered in glitter and bows. we all know that these plants are meant to attract people who won't take care of them but are attracted by the shiny stuff.
Thank you very much for the information, I actually didn't purchase the plants I received them together as a gift. I will re-pot them as soon as possible. Thank you again.
that wasn't a dig on you, mrgreenthumbs! hope i didn't sound too brusque; i was kinda off topic anyway. happy holidays!
