I have two holly trees in my Providence, RI garden, both about 30' tall. One is well-shaped and handsome. The other has unsightly bare whips for many of its branches, with leaves growing only at the tips of the whips. It blooms every year and appears to be healthy. Why does it grow this way, and is there anything I can do to improve its appearance?
If it is flowering or fruiting heavily the bare sections could correspond to where masses of these were borne. One thing about holly, you can cut it back to any point and it will grow back - even from a stump.
