Hi everyone, can you tell me if this is an amaryllis or a hippestrum? it flowered once, four big pink and white flowers on a stalk. does it matter in terms of care? or do they have similar needs?

It may well be both: the common name for Hippeastrum is amaryllis, even though amaryllises aren't Amaryllises.

That's how I understood it worked in terms of the naming too. There seems a lot of confusion around plant names at times!

Tropical large-flowered amaryllis is Hippeastrum botanically. Plant in genus Amaryllis is A. belladonna. Botanical name for one will be common name for the other because of structural similarity of the two related types. It is the same as Pelargoniums being called geraniums.
