Hi, I am wondering if anyone out there can help me. I have an old rose growing at the edge of the garden and right next to the root also comes up a blackberry vine. I would like to get rid of the blackberry without damaging the rose. Any ideas what might kill off that pest? Thanks. Kady lady

How much blackberry is there? If you can snip the canes off at the ground, it will gradually kill the plant, better if you can get some of the roots.

I don't know about an herbicide. I never use them. Seems like it would probably damage the rose.

It's not legal to use herbicide without a permit in Victoria.

Thanks for your reply. I am aware that herbicides are not legal, and I don't want to use them, but I was hoping for something organic. I don't think vinegar would do the job as the plant seems to be quite established. (I just moved into this property). I'll try to keep clipping it and hope it works.

It works, but you have to keep at it for a few years, although it is less vigorous each time it comes back. Maybe somebody has an easier method.

    i agree with Eric's comments.
    I have a few blackberries deep in a flower-shrub border -
every year, snip them off below the soil as much as possible w/o hurting your rose - and then cover it with some tough black plastic folded up into a fairly small size (garbage bag is too thin) and secure w/ a couple of stones. Eventually, after 3 yrs in my case - it will expire.

Thanks to all for your comments. It looks like snipping it off below surface is my best option. Will try it. Kady lady
