Help with term "ripe stem"

    Okay, I feel kind of foolish that I don't know this.... I just bought a clematis (Henryi), and the planting instructions say to plant with about 6" of stem below the soil line, and that the stem needs to be "ripe."

    Can anyone explain what this means to me, please?

    Mature. Fully firmed up. Don't know what this has to do with planting out a nursery purchase, the lower part of the stem(s) will have long since become "ripe" at the time the specimen will be considered finished and sent out from the production facility.

    Many thanks! That's what I thought, but was also confused for the reason you describe. Perhaps the directions I found were addressed to people who might be planting cuttings from another plant?
