Spreading vigorously by rhizomes. This plant has shown up in the last two years, and is very aggressive. It’s on a slope of glacial till. Because of its abrupt appearance I was worried about a broken pipe, but that hasn’t been proven. The area apparently does have underground streams, and this area is particularly wet, but garden has been here for 20 years approximately with no previous sighting. Any help much appreciated.

It makes me think of a kind of Iris. Does it flower?
Here (central france) Iris pseudacorus, yellow or blue, can be found rather frequently in forests or along rivers. They grow in damp places.

Yes, strongly resembles something in the iris family. Wait for the first flower and post that, if no one recognizes it in the meantime. Should be straightforward once in a flower.
