We are trying to determine what variety our Seattle neighbor has and would like to buy one. He bought the house after the tree was planted and doesn't know what it is. The pictures were taken 10 days ago after the tree started to lose its leaves. The leaves are a nice red/orange during the year that become more intense in the fall. Appreciate any help.

There are hundreds of kinds of Japanese maples. Some are raised from seed and sold incorrectly as named clonal varieties (common examples 'Bloodgood' and 'Atropurpureum'). Perhaps this is one of those, making finding the same exact seedling for sale elsewhere impossible - theirs would be the only one in existence. Probably work best to visit nurseries to see what else they might have that also has the attributes you like in the plant shown, buy one of those instead - if you don't find the same one the neighbor has being sold as a grafted, named selection.

Shop now to be sure of similar fall color, otherwise much bigger selection will be seen offered during spring.

Although these are highly popular, with all big independent nurseries here offering multiple varieties in season perhaps the greatest numbers of kinds can be found near Seattle at Wells-Medina nursery.

Thanks for your feedback. Will check with Wells-Medina, maybe think about trying to graft from the neighbor's tree.

Thanks for your input. the color in your pic looks close, but the shape of the leaves is a bit thinner and look shinier, the bark looks darker. Also the other pics on the forum show quite green leaves in th summer. But who knows, you could be right.
