We have dozens of these growing in a patch of the back yard. They all seem to have kept their leaves over the winter, and look to have tiny little growing tips now. Leaves are mostly red now, about 2 inches long... We're wondering WHAT THEY ARE, and if we should prune these or just leave them alone?? see pic PS: We're in SE New Brunswick, which is zone 5a (-20°F to -15°F ). More pics coming shortly...
so... had a closer look today! not 'red leaves'... just green leaves that turned red over winter. These little srubs are about half a meter tall, by the way. Here are more pics ( last one is little seedlings found all around these plants - under the mulch... dunno if they are young shoots, or unrelated!)
I think they (the big ones) are rhododendrons/azaleas, pretty sure now! Maybe even the r. Canadense variety that grows natively around here? Leaves on most of these are pretty beat up after the winter - do you think we should prune them, or just leave them alone ??
