HI, I ripped out my back yard last year, as the previous owner had it too overgrown. We started from scratch with yards of new soil, and grass sod. This year, we have filled in the sparse places with top soil and patch grass seed, which has grown in nicely. We take care of the lawn, using a reel mower (instead of rotary) and appropriate fertilizer. Here is the problem: As of last month, and despite a very low cut (practically scalping it) in early spring, the areas of grass that are predominately the old sod turf, are turning white. We have recently bought new blades for the mower, so sharpening is not a problem. Could it be too thick and "choking" itself out, thus dying a bit? Help! We want a nice green lawn! Ideas?
you should only cut the top 1/3 of the blade. cutting too low gives you that whiteness and leaves the grass in shock. when cut to short, you take the chance of the sun causing damage as well as giving the weeds the opportunity to work their way into the lawn.
