Hello, I recently purchased a Karasugawa off of eBay. When it showed it was half dead. I tried for a week to get it to turn around and it just got worse. The eBay seller was awesome and sent me a new one which looked great. About a week or two went by with me giving little attention to the dead Karasugawa. While cleaning up around the backyard I noticed this plant had some growth coming out underneath the graft on the rootstock. the Graft was and is still dead (cut the Karasu off at graft now), but this thing has really taken off underneath. The eBay seller just said it was a Acer Palmatum seedling and she was unsure what it may be. Attached are some pics, what do you guys think? Thanks, Chris
Looks like Acer palmatum species. There is wide variability. It won't be any named cultivar as these are usually propagated by grafting, and a rooted cutting would not be used for understock, which is a seedling normally. Leaf color is also quite variable in the first few years of a seedling's life, but for now this looks like it may eventually make a pretty plant. -E
