I bought this plant couple months ago, the seller told me it was "lily" (He wasn't able to be more specific than that.) I've been trying to search online but haven't been able to find anything similar in lily family. What I know is it likes shade and a lot of water. Can anyone help telling me what it is? Thanks!
I did a search to find out what a 'peace lily' is and at http://www.peacelily.net/ it is said that "The peace lily (spathiphyllum) appeared to be able to purify the air from dangerous matters such as formaldehyde..." IS that statement true, or is it just a hoax to sell the plant?
The air purification yarn is a bit of hype. A bowl of jello will work just as well, maybe better!!! I know its been attributed to some NASA study but good luck tracking down an actual journal publication. The website on your link is full of nonsense. BTW, your plant is a Spathiphyllum. Its an Aroid not a "lily" except in the broadest sense that people call any flowering monocot a "lily". They grow best with the soil constantly damp as most Spathiphyllum are swamp plants in nature. If they dry out, they will wilt very quickly.
Thanks for the enlightenment, Cereusly Steve! It has been in my mind great doubts about statements that say certain plants can purify the air, ward off mosquitoes, etc. I will be more careful. In a forum like ours I greatly hope plants are given by their scientific names. I was confused with the name 'lily' and had been wondering why almost any flowering plant was a lily! Cereusly Steve certainly helped in this.
