I have a beautiful indoor fiddle leaf fig (fyi: i live in Vancouver).

Within the past month I have been alarmed to notice that when I water the plant microscopic bugs (?) emerge from the soil and start hopping. Also in the bottom of the water collecting tray there were tiny, wiggly white things (smaller than a grain of sand). I have since changed the tray.

I have tried applying diotomacious earth topically to the soil with no success.

HELP...what type of pest is this and how do i get rid of it?

ps. my partner seems to think they maybe feeding on the root system of the plant
