Hi, we will be building a new house and a great old twin Arbutus tree is in building envelope. We intend to save/move the tree on the lot. People have told us that it can be very difficult to move/save an Arbutus tree. In any event, we will try. However, is this true? Can anyboby give us any tips to increase our chances?
Sounds too big to move without thousands of dollars and a qualified contractor. Keeping it alive and healthy where it is requires avoiding the roots - no driving vehicles over the root zone, dumping excess concrete or paint, stacking building materials etc. Building needs to be designed around it, the root zone roped or fenced off. The roots will extend beyond the reach of the branches.
