This is Acer palmatum 'Bihou' (name tree is commonly sold as). You will find it in the maple photo gallery as: Acer palmatum 'Bi hoo' Acer palmatum 'Bi hoo' If you decide to go with this variety it must have perfect drainage, never use synthetic nitrogen fertilizer, and never prune during the dormant season. It is highly susceptible to twig dieback, black tips, and bacterial infection. Try to get a larger tree if possible. (Mine is grown in a cedar box successfully, only option as our late winters are extremely wet; useing only organic slow release low nitrogen fertilizer.) A good alternative is Acer palmatum 'Japanese Sunrise' with yellow and coral bark. It's a variety that is less problematic.
That's all very good advice! Personally I'd avoid Bi hoo like the plague. :) If that's what the picture is (and I don't doubt J0hn's eye) that's the biggest one I've ever seen! I like 'Japanese Sunrise', a very nice maple indeed.
