Hi - i have never gardened or had a plant in my life. i wanted an orchid so my sweet boyfriend (who also does not garden) bought me a beautiful one - it was fine for a while - i heard they need minimal water and light, so ive had it in my bedroom with about 3 tblsp water 1-2 times a week and indirect sunlight. 2 flowers fell off about 10 days ago, then if was fne again, but now a leaf died and 2 more flowers are going, and there is a little brown on the petals - i have no idea what species it is or where he got it. does anyoe know and can you help me not kill this beautiful thing?? Thanks!!
In the spring and summer, I give my orchids a good soaking every week (or when the bark mixture is dry).I place mine in the sink or bathtub, so that all the water will run out of the plant. They sit in a east facing window, and out of direct summer sun. In the winter I only water once every 2-3 weeks. Once the flowers are finished you should cut the stem abck to the first node (bump on the stem) this way it may have a side shoot that will open.Give it some orchid fertilizer every other time you water in the spring and summer. I also find that a very small amount of epsom slats in the water will encourage blooms. Hope this helps. Oh yes and your is a Phaleanopsis orchid.
