    Hi there,

I live in Toronto and bought a house that came with a small garden that includes a grape vine. Last summer was my first in the house, and the vine bore a little bit of fruit. I haven't done anything to it at all, and i'm wondering if I should--i don't want it to die! The vine was draped around a tree, but I had to move it off and as of this afternoon it's lying on the ground because I'm not sure what to do with it. It looks like there are some buds that will presumably turn into leaves, but some of it also looks dried out. Do I need to prune? Am I too late? Should I attach it to a trellis?

Any help at all would be hugely appreciated! It's great to inherit a garden, but a little overwhelming when I've spent my life accidentally killing house plants!

    thanks,
    Miranda

I would replace the vine and observe how it performs over the summer. Grape vines are best pruned while dormant...ie Jan/Feb in your climate zone. You may try cuttings
from any damaged portions of your vine...What are your intentions?

Thanks for the speedy reply. My intention is just to keep the vine alive, really, because it looked so pretty last year. Is it all right to drape it back on the tree, do you think? The tree's pretty too, so I don't want to harm it either! (As you can probably tell, I have zero gardening knowledge!)

Grape vines can be easily damaged from extreme twisting, in your vines' case from a supported positon to non...the possiblity of cracking them increases...good luck...if you do prune in May...it will likely weep moisture for some time and resulting in a poor performance for the currnent growing season...again use care and good luck.
