Hello everyone, I opened this topic because I have difficulties identifying the Acer Palmatum cultivar you see on the pictures below. I am a newby when it comes to Japanese maples you see. I bought this Japanese maple last year from a nursery based in the UK. The maple was sold to me as Acer Palmatum Autumn Glory. However, when I compare it to the Acer Palmatum Autumn Glory on the website of Esveld and in the book by Vertrees and Gregory, I can only conclude that this maple doesn't look like an Autumn Glory at all, but rather like an Acer Palmatum Ever Autumn, Jiro Shidare or Omato. I am hoping someone with more knowledge could identify this Japanese maple properly. Any effort will be much appreciated. Picture 1: Taken in June 2013. Picture 2: Taken in August 2013. Picture 3: Taken in October 2013.
It looks as an Acer amoenum . Perhaps 'Nyaku oji' (ohji or ouji). (1991) "A large leaved tree of Acer amoenum f.latilobatum / The spring foliage is young green, turning deep green in summer. The automn foliage turns yellow". In "Books for Maples" by Masayoshi yano. This hypothesis needs confirmation.
Thank you very much for the reply. I checked a couple of pictures on a Japanese maple website of to compare the leaf structure and size and they look very similar. Case closed I guess :-)
Hm, it is very hard to identify cultivars even in person much less from a photo. Not to mention an immature plant! :) To me, from Yano's photo, the leaf margins here appear much more cut that 'Nyaku oji'. I won't venture a guess, but I agree it doesn't resemble Autumn Glory much. This latter after all is ssp matsumurae.
I have Autumn glory, and the pictures do not match the plant I have. Unfortunately I do not have any photos to post.
Thanks for the replies. The search continues. I'm planning to visit Esveld next weekend. Perhaps one of the staff members can have a look at the pics and put me in the right direction.
