Help! I need to transplant a very large and happy hydrangea due to some upcoming construction at our house. Ideally I would like to temporarily move the hydrangea and then replant it very close to its original location once construction is complete. Can a mature 8' + hydrangea handle this kind of trauma and what would be the best way to proceed? I have a shady spot with lots of extra compost that I could temporarily store it during construction....
thank for any words of wisdom!

I believe your large hydrangea will be fine. My suggestion is do the transplanting on a cool day. They get dug up and divided all the time, and your project shouldn't hurt it.

Don't be surprised if the foliage wilts and even shrivels, however moved with a big proportion of roots and kept moist it will presumably grow new leaves later.
