Have a medium light room that occasionally dips to 30 degrees. Have had mixed success with washingtonia robusta. Is it realistic to expect success with this plant under these circumstances. Are there other palms similar in appearance that might be more adaptable?
I don't know for sure, but I would sure try Livistona chinensis, Chinese Fan Palm, indoors before trying Washingtonia. The Livistona can take those temps indoors away from dew/frost just fine, and they do better as a housplant in lower humidity. They also have a more lush, tropical appearance IMHO. You can get them at the home centers for 10 bucks. :) Edit: If you can tolerate a slightly different look, Rhapis excelsa, see Plant, is my very favorite indoor palm. They really thrive as a houseplant in a wide variety of temps, humidity, & light. Kentia palms are great indoors too.
