I just moved into a new house and there is some sort of plant or weed growing all over the flower bed. It seems to have been planted but is very invasive. Is there anyone that can identify it at such an early stage? I am tempted to pull it all out but am very worried as it has spread so much and our house is only four years old!

Annual fireweeds (Epilobium). Pull them up.

Thank you. Is it common for people to plant fireweed?

No, not these annual species. Nobody has to plant them or would want to. They are ubiquitous weeds with tiny flowers. Some do plant perennial species with showy flowers. The white form of the familiar rampant Epilobium angustifolium, for instance, is actually quite lovely in flower. And there are alpine species with equally large flowers on a small compact plant, that appeal to some rock gardeners.

The seeds are very small and blow a long way on the wind - these things tend to come up anywhere there is some bare soil, whether you want them or not.
