I've looked in wildflower and garden plants list. This is a new one to my very shady back yard. It might have come in with a load of wood chips I got from the county dept of transportation last fall. It bloomed in late May, in Central New York State. There are 4 plants, the tallest (and less trampled by the dog) is about 13 inches high.

To Ron B: I appreciate the quick reply. But I have anohter question: the photos/drawings I can find of bluebells show a very different leaf structure. Is it just that this plant type (family?) has many variations?

Look up Hyacinthoides, (blue bell, wood hyacinth). That will get you to the right area....barb

    Spanish Bluebell (Hyacinthoides hispanica).

Some other unrelated plants have sometimes erroneously been called "bluebells" through historical confusion.

Thanks so much for this information. I'm new to this world, but have learned a lot in this one search to name this plant.
