Hello, First of all, this is my first post on this website so please bare with me. Any suggestion you might have is appreciated. My neighbor gave me so many plants because she could no longer care for them. She doesn't know what most of them are but had cared for them for so long. There is one particular plant I really like so I want to know what it is to better care for it. It is sitting in front of a window where it is bright and the sun comes through. It was leaning to one side because it had so many "spurts" --- or shoots --- coming through on the other side. I put more dirt in it to see if this would help, but it didn't. It's leaning on one side again. I water it once a week (since it looks like it holds water on its leaves). If you could identify this plant and know how to care for it, I'd really appreciate your help.
Haworthia. Exact species is hard to say, perhaps something like attenuata or reinwardtii. These are tough plants that do great in a windowsill. They have a standard growing season, with a little less water needed in the winter; except for a unique summer rest period of about 6 weeks from perhaps early July to the middle of August. During this time you also want to take care to water them less while they renew their roots underground. They like full sun in a windowsill and nice loose, free-draining mix. :)
Thank you so much, Tom! I looked up the name and I believe that it is the Haworthia Reinwardtii. Knowing what the plant is helps people like me have a better idea of how to care for it. It also helps talking to people who are willing to share their stories, experience, and knowledge. Thanks again!
Tom, Heli, thank you again. Well, I Emailed someone a while back to see if it was Attenuata or Reinwardtii, and he said it was definitely a Haworthia Attenuata, just etoliated (low light conditions?). He said it's stretched out because it's not getting enough sunlight. No matter where I look, it seems to be this is a Reinwardtii... either way, I'll do the best I can to help it grow and grow and grow! It's such a neat plant. I replanted the Haworthia in a smaller, nicer pot and it seems to be doing really well. When I dug it out, it had small ones around it, which I potted am trying to see if I could save and grow to new plants. :) Here are the pics! The first ones show the Haworthia (with some of the babies planted in the same pot) and the last one shows 2 small Haworthias with a small baby jade I started last year.
Wow looks really healthy! mine is'nt that tall but it has alot of babies. Mine is a Hawortha Fasciata Varagata, but it looks alot like yours. I was reading that they are winter growers and go dormant during the summer Thanks for shareing the pics:)
Heli, I copied and pasted your Haworthia's name on Google and somehow it came up with a plant that said "Attenuata" --- and it looked JUST like mine. I'm confused... Reinwardtii... Attenuata... ugh. LOL Anyway, yeah, I didn't give it a lot of attention in the winter, though. It didn't get a lot of sun, either, just by bright windows. Right now it gets direct sun (when the sun is out, at least!) for a few hours. I'm crossing my fingers that it (and its little babies) do well since I've repotted. >_< Good to know about the reverse dormant stage. I will research that. Thank you! EC
Oh really! thats cool, so thanks to you I know exactly what mine is too,I just love this forum, It's fun to comunicate with others who share a love for plants and growing things.Maybe we can find out what the difference is between the two Haworthas. You must have a really green thumb cause yours all look like their doing great.
