Hi! I would like to get a friend a magnolia as a wedding gift. Her yard, here in victoria, is very sunny and in need of a tree! Any recommendations for species, optimal planting times, nurseries, etc would be greatly appreciated. I can't keep houseplants alive so I need help! :)

Does your friend want a large (60'+), medium (30'-60'), or small tree (<30') in their front yard when it is fully grown? There are a couple of large Magnolias, many more medium choices and probably even more small choices. Any preference for flower colour?

It's for the backyard that is in desparate need of any landscaping. They just bought the house and the yard is a fenced in bit of grass. I would guess that a medium sized tree would do the trick, maybe with fat purple-y white blooms?

They come in yellow too, in case you didn't know. If you visit local nurseries you might find a cultivar called "Elizabeth" in bloom.

Fat, purple-and-white, not bloomed out for this year and possible to find in a garden center = M. X soulangeana 'Lennei'.
