I have a 60 year old Japanese Maple in my backyard. I've discovered some strange growth on the branches of my tree. I've attached some pictures... Perhaps someone can help?

    Thanks!

The colored growth are Lichens. It just tells
me the areas that have them have high moisture,
algae to feed on and lack of direct sunlight to
burn them off. We get these on our older Fruit
and Nut trees and ornamental and flowering
trees here. I would not worry about these on
your tree as they are not considered to be
    harmful.
