Help identifying this dried flower and seeds

    I found this interesting dried plant in front of the Pleasant Valley Library, NY, zone 5.
    It is strange in that the dried flowers are quite a distance from the seeds.

    Can someone please identify this beautiful dried plant?

    It looks like a dead flower head of a Hydrangea. Possibly one such as Hydrangea paniculata.

    Hydrangea have 2 types of flowers fertile and infertile. This wonderful site has some really excellent pics which show very clearly (in close up) the difference.
    You twig still has the large infertile flower at the tips of the now dead flower head.

    That seems to fit the bill although I never would have thought of Hydrangea. I'll take a good look at them next summer.
