Grows in Virginia mountains. It was close to wild blueberry plants and the leaves are similar. Is it wild blueberry or related? And maybe the fruit just hasn’t ripened? The fruit has been this greenish blue color for about 4 weeks.

Yes, it is a species of blueberry (Vaccinium); not sure which.

I've been picking and eating the wild blueberries, but the fruit on this plant is either not ripe or just not the fruit for me. Tough and bitter. If anyone has any additional information, please let me know.

    Thanks.

Well, there are eighteen species of Vaccinium in the northeastern US. Of these, at least a dozen would produce fruit we'd colloquially call blueberries (and bilberries), and each (of course) has a different taste.

Unfortunately, in the Manual of Vasc Plants of Northeastern US and Adjacent Canada, the key to identifying the different species of Vaccinium relies heavily on flower characteristics. A couple guesses might be possible with a scan or macro photograph of the upper and lower surfaces of the leaves along with measurements (and the height of the plant).
