Can anyone tell me what these ugly things are that are in my backyard? They seem to be growing on what appears to be buried wood in my backyard. As most posters in this forums I am concerned if they might be something unhealthy for my pet dogs. They things appeared last year and have reappeared again this year. The growth shown in these pictures represents perhaps one and a half weeks worth as I dug them up when I last mowed the lawn. There are probably eight to ten of these things in a one square yard area. Many of them appear to have a jelly like substance on the upper portion of the fungus. Here are a couple of shots of one sample blob. I have a 12 oz can for scale reference. I noticed the lawn actually grows into the fungus but when handled they are quite firm. The second to last shot is the underside of the fungus shown in the first three pictures. The last shot is one of the other funguses showing the apricot preserves look more closely. I hope one of you smart folks can help me determine what these things are. Thanks in advance for any help you can give.
My question would be, does the underside have pores or teeth? -but- You may wish to take a look at this thread on Abortiporus biennis http://www.botanicalgarden.ubc.ca/forums/showthread.php?t=41534&highlight=rock
