Can anyone tell me what this is? It is growing in a part of my yard that is not landscaped near a creek. There are no leaves on it yet so I can't identify with those. It is just this flower on top of an approximately 4 foot stick. (seems like a young tree). I have never seen anything like this. (I am quite an amateur though) I am in Northeast Ohio. I just took this picture yesterday. I have lived here for 5 years and never noticed it before. I am brand new to this website. I'm excited to learn!

Arisaema draconitum? Without seeng the flower (which would have been quite something, and would have appeared earlier in the season in the same spot), I couldn't tell you for sure.

What you're seeing, incidentally, is the leaf of the plant emerging.

Hickory Carya sp., vegetative bud leafing out - the leaves are pinnate, not palmate, and spirally (alternately) arranged, not opposite.

Fabulous picture. Thank you for posting it. Lucky you, living near a creek.
