I believe this is a fairly common houseplant, it was a special gift that has slowly been losing leafs (from the bottom up). Once I identify what it is, then I hope to get some help in hopefully saving this plant.

i believe this is your plant .. Dieffenbachia Camile .. otherwise known as a Dumbcane but it is a Dieffenbachia it may b the Camile .. they r touchy to water .. try letting your water sit out over night .. and they are more the tropical type .. they love to b misted and also watch out for spider mites .. they love them plants .. u can see the mites when u mist it .. they will b a webbing on the plant .. u can just run it under a shower to get rid of them but also use a mite spray ..
here is a link to your plant .. http://www.denverplants.com/foliage/html/DifCamile.htm

and also watch out with this plant if u yave pets or young children .. it is poisonous . but only if they get to it ..like chew it ..

    good luck
