Hi there. I'm new to the forum. I'm in Edmonton and I'm not sure if it is an elm. A friend thought it was elm so he disposed of all the branches properly. I'm just wondering if it is elm so I can deal with any branches properly in regards to Dutch Elm. Here are some pics. Thanks a lot!

Looks more like a Manitoba maple / box-elder to me. Get a close-up pics of the leaves please?

Well, it's not an elm. You can post close-up photos of the twigs / buds, that should be enough to ID it.

Ditto to Manitoba Maple Acer negundo, for definite. Notoriously prone to branch splitting like this, too; just naturally weak wood, not diseased.

Good to know. I'll get some of the larger branches trimmed before another one comes down. Thanks for the help!
