Hello, I would like to identify a shrub growing in the Clearwater Valley in British Columbia, Canada. It is about 2 meters tall and located on a sunny, west facing slope in dry, gravel soil. The attached photos were taken in late July 2021 after an extended period with no rain. In the photos there is a Choke Cherry growing close beside it. Thanks, Doug
Pine cone willow gall maybe. Rabdophaga strobiloides (Willow Pinecone Gall Midge) - by Gary B - JungleDragon Salix sp. Weird Willow Gall
Yes, exactly. Just to be clear -- the shrub is a willow (Salix), while the rose-like structure is a gall. Did you want the willow identified to species?
Thanks to Silver Surfer and Daniel. Solved my mystery. I confess to having very little knowledge of plants. Was sure it was a Willow but had never heard of or seen galls on a willow before.
