This plant started outside our kitchen door. My wife is always tossing out stuff for the birds and I wonder if there might not have been seeds in some of the what she tossed. It's about 2' tall, yellow flowers, heart shaped leaves and odd shaped seed pods. Here is a photo...
I just did a Google Image seach for the plant you suggested and you appear to be absolutly correct. Thank you very much.
It is common weed here in south-western India. Commonly called as Country Mallow. The scientific name is Abutilon indicum. Here it is aslo called as 'Petary' or 'Kanghi'. Its leaves are said to have certain medicinal properties, stems are used for rope making. Nandan
I just had another look at Abutilon species in North America and actually there are lots of them. Abutilon theophrasti looks right to me (see e. g. the drawing on http://linnet.geog.ubc.ca/Atlas/Atlas.aspx?sciname=Abutilon theophrasti) but A. indicum might be very similar. Nevertheless the only Abutilon species that is listed by USDA for the New England area seems to be Abutilon theophrasti (see http://plants.usda.gov/java/profile?symbol=ABUTI). Abutilon indicum seems to be in the wild only in more tropical areas of the U.S. Birdseed may just contain anything, however. So who knows how to tell apart Abutilon indicum and A. theophrasti?
