Hello from Alaska to my friends from botanicalgarden.ubc.ca. I have taken a lot of flower pictures up here in Alaska since I last contacted you folks. Once again I have come across one that has me puzzled. When I took the picture I thought I knew what it was. One of the Listera family. But, my books and what I can find on the Internet tell me I am all wet. The plant was growing in a ditch on a hill at Fort Egbert, Eagle City on the Yukon River, Alaska. The picture was taken on June 21, 2009. The ditch was dug straight up the hill some years back by the YCC group tracking an old (prior to 1910) water line. Thank you for your efforts and trouble. Dickie
Thank you for the quick reply Ron. I have spent some time in my favorite book and on the Internet. Sure are a lot of Silene, but my book, (J.P Anderson Flora of Alaska) cuts it down to three white flowered Silene here in Alaska. Night-flowering Catchfly, (S. noctiflora), I eleminated immediately. I took the picture close to 11 PM in June. There was still plenty of sunshine and the flower looked healthy. That leaves S. menziessi and S. williamsii. I believe my flower is the Menzies Campion, S. Menziesii, because of the white petals being a little longer than the calyx. Again, thanks a lot for your help. Dickie
