Identification: Help identify japanese maple

    Got this from a garden store in the fall last year when all leafs were already gone and was labelled red pygmy. When I google images of red pygmy it looks nothing like mine. Any help is much appreciated.

    Looks like it might be an Acer japonicum cultivar. There are a lot less of those than A. palmatum cultivars, so it narrows it down some.

    I agree it looks a lot like a variant of A. japonicum. It was probably mislabeled, as it is hard to imagine that a true A. palmatum 'red pygmy' would resort to A. japonicum.

    fyi, the Acer genus was the most difficult to normalize when we were preparing that group for our database. Mis-labeling is rampant, as is the use of illegitimate and mis-leading names. Many suppliers take advantage of the fact that this is one of the most expensive plants in the marketplace.
