Please can anyone identify this cactus and also what is wrong with these new leaves.
I found in our recycle room in basement of the building. No one else claimed it so after a week, I brought "Bud" home. He was rootbound and I gave him a bigger pot with new soil from friend who owns a greenhouse. Also put him by my sliding door for light.
A month later, he started growing beautiful green leaves out of his top??? Now two months later, the leaves are turning black at the edges? Please help... "Bud" has become the cat I can't own in this building. Also, help with exactly how to care for him. All info is greatly appreciated!

Might be Pachypodium lamerei, Madagascar Palm.

Yes, it does look like Pachypodium, probably P. lamerei. I don't see much black edges, I wouldn't worry too much. I do see some hourglass-shaped leaves, which probably means it wasn't getting enough water while the leaf was forming. Doesn't necessarily mean you weren't watering it, perhaps just that as it was establishing new roots after repotting it wasn't able to take up the water; typical situation. So be careful not to overwater it while it reestablishes itself. Those new skinny and malformed leaves may be die back as it gets going again after the repot... the main thing is to focus on the newest leaves, and hope that they are progressively bigger and better-shaped.
I notice it is right near a vent, is that a return or a warm air vent? Most houseplants don't do as well as they could near those. How about light? Is it getting at least a few hours of direct sun every day? The soil your friend gave you, was it for general houseplants or was it a cactus mix (which would be better for your plant)?.

Thank you both for the info! It is warm air return. Should I move it? I had it by the tv but thought it might not like that. It is getting light from the sliding doors right next to it. I can't wait till summer and will put it on my patio. Although I live on 7th floor of high rise. Could that be too high up for it? Might be too windy. I pull it over more towards the door during the day when I am home alone. Cactus soil with sand?? So the leaves are normal to sprout? Only came out after I repotted and put in light. I keep revolving it cause otherwise it starts leaning toward the light. Has straightened up a great deal since coming to live with me. Once a month too much water?? Thanks again for all the information!
