Hello friendly gardeners, I have a question about a tree I cam across in the summer. Thought it was some kind of cherry, but now am not so sure because the leaves lacked glands at the base. Located at Jericho Beach park, leaves 5-12 cm, pubescent on both sides, alternate arrangement, grey bark with orange lenticels. Looked like it had some kind of drupe, but it was high up and there weren't many of them. Please see attached photos...
Image didn't come through. Here are the instructions for attaching files on the forums. http://www.botanicalgarden.ubc.ca/forums/showthread.php?t=725
Sorry - I followed the instructions but it didn't load. I switched computers, maybe that will help...
Also make sure you are waiting until the photo actually uploads before proceeding. Sometime people close the upload window too soon.
Hmmm - i did wait, even thought it took awhile. And I am a fairly tech-savvy user... I attached again, and it says I have 2.01 MB in photos attached, but when I hit submit nothing attaches...
Looks like Prunus x pugetensis. This seldom produces viable fruits, possibly one shown is among very few on tree. How big are the leaves? Puget cherry has leaves looking generally like those of bitter cherry but longer and broader. It may appear anywhere bitter and sweet cherries grow near one another in this region - a fairly common occurrence, as sweet cherry has long since gone wild here.
Hi Ron Leaves are 5-12cm and pubescent (at least the ones I could reach). Indeed sounds like x pugetensis. Thanks so much for the lead! best... Todd
