I hope this is the right place. It's been windy here for a few weeks and every once in a while one of these appears in my back yard. I think it's a seed pod but I really have no idea. Could anyone tell me anything about them?
Thanks for the quick reply, and that information changes things a bit. I thought they'd been blowing in from a neighbors yard or something, but now I think they're coming from my tree. I have a Red Oak in the yard, and these were pretty close to it. It was really windy last night so I guess they could have blown off of the tree. I don't see any on the tree looking at it from the ground, and this is the second time in two weeks I've found them on the ground after a windy night. Their caused by wasps? Anything I can do to get rid of them? Will they hurt the tree? Interesting.
Only an extreme infestation (worse than what it is shown in the photograph on that page) would damage the tree, and even at that, I doubt such an infestation would occur year after year after year after year (which would be required to eventually kill the tree). If you're having difficulty spotting them, that would be nowhere near a heavy infestation, and I would take a "let it be" approach.
I was able to see only two more on the tree after a quick look. These things have me intrigued, I'd never heard of such a thing before. Anyway, thanks for the help, it's been great!
