    Hi,

Does anyone recognise this PNW native plant? It's a volunteer from Galiano Island but I've kept it in its pot since last summer because I don't know what it is or where to plant it.

It's never produced a flower or even a stalk, but it's always managed to keep its leaves green... its very very hairy leaves.

Any suggestions so I can finally get this baby into the ground some place where it'll be happy?

    Thanks muchly!

Aster family plant on the order of a hawkweed, cat's ear or coast dandelion.

I'll keep looking but the white-flowered hawkweed (Hieracium albiflorum) is a likely candidate...

    Thanks Ron B.

Yes, I think the purple flush visible on yours is typical for that one.

So should I be wary of adding this hawkweed to my garden?? Maybe I should plant it in a forest or park around Vancouver instead?? I know most other hawkweeds are invasive species and spread like wildfire so I presume that, even though H. albiflorum is native, it probably spreads throughout its environment pretty quickly too. Right? Hmm.... Pretty but worrisome...

If Hieracium albiflorum, one reference I checked noted it was weedy, another didn't say that but also mentioned it grows anywhere except undisturbed sites.

Thanks Daniel. I appreciate that info. I think I'll move the pot into a sunnier spot this spring to see if I can encourage the plant to flower - and then, if it turns out to be H. albiflorum, I'll probably plant it in the forest somewhere so it can add to the native ecology without taking over my garden :)
    Thanks again.
