Can I substitute something (maybe vinegar) instead of sulfuric acid to help iron uptake in my plants? I would rather not use something as harsh as sulfuric acid. What options do I have?

Errr, please don't mess with sulfuric acid. It's not necessary and it's dangerous.

I assume you are dealing with alkaline soil and binding of iron compounds, making your plants prone to chlorosis? Off hand, chelated iron would a much safer, available alternative.

If you do some research on the web, you can probably find information that would pertain to the particular soils in your area, and other, possibly better, alternatives.
