help for magnolia tree weeping sap?

Discussion in 'Magnoliaceae' started by unregistered, Jul 4, 2005.

  1. We have a well-established (15ft tall, at least 10 year old) magnolia tree that predates our owning of our house so we do not know the exact type. Before this spring it flowered beautifully and most blossoms opened within a short space of time. This year, however, it did not flower like this - it produced few flowers over a long time period, although it seems to have produced leaves with no problems and looks healthy.

We thought that the change in flowering pattern might be due to weather, which had been a bit strange this spring. However, recently we noticed that a large number of the branches are weeping sap, with no obvious damage or wounds, along large portions of their length. In addition, some of the ends of branches (about 1ft worth) scattered over the tree have died. The weeping has been going on for at least 4 weeks now and we are not sure if this is a problem, or what to do about it if it is.

Any information or suggestions are appreciated! Thanks very much
