Trying to beat the jays? I've never thought to sample them while still soft. They can certainly be eaten raw, of course.
Thanks for the info Ron. Its just not the Jays I am trying to beat, although they are pests, but trying to find recipes for raw filberts instead of waiting 2 months for them to dry. I usually pick them just before they fall and the jays and racoons have not got to them. I have been thinking of trying to dry them in a warm oven. That may work. Cheers, Bert
You can dry them in an oven (the commercial guys do) or a food dehydrator set on a high (150-160o) setting. If the jays are leaving your trees alone, count your blessings! Our trees often get stripped before the nuts are even close to ready.
