We saw this flower in a mid-sized tree growing in a broken lava field, at about 2500' on the dry side of Waimea, at the north end of the Big Island of Hawaii last February. I thought it might be a Banksia, but don't think that is correct. It was the only example of this flower that I saw in three weeks there, so it's not common. Does anyone know what it is?

Actually it is pretty common there. Many are seen in lowlands, even at the beach.

Thanks for the information .. that's good to know and I'll watch for it on our next trip. I guess the enormous number of flowers was a bit overwhelming and I didn't notice it.

I wouldn't expect it so much up in the mountains. In the past there have been guidebooks sold in shops there that identify more familiar or noticeable trees of the public landscape. Multiple botanical gardens and arboreta, where you can put names to "faces" are also present in various locations on the major islands.
