I will be visiting Havana next week for a few days. SWMBO has arranged the trip, but I may have time to look at a botanical garden or the like. Does anyone have any recommendations? (Don't tell George Bush that I am going, please!)
Try here: JardÃn Botánico Nacional, Havana http://www.uh.cu/centros/jbn/ English page with location and opening times: http://www.uh.cu/centros/jbn/textos/1i.html
I toured that garden in 1988 and it was beautiful. Unfortunately my guide couldn't identify alot of the plants but it was still worth the visit. It looks like it has greatly improved since then too from the information on the internet and a Japanese Garden has been added. This is the garden trip I dream of doing in Cuba: http://www.realcubaonline.com/eco_gardens_of_eastern_cuba.asp Les
The one I'd most like to see there is Pinus tropicalis, endemic to western Cuba (Pinar del Rio area, Isla de la Juventud). Virtually unknown in cultivation outside of Cuba, either in cultivation or even herbarium specimens.
