I was in Fuerteventura in the Canary Islands recently and saw a plant which has me stumped. It grows extensively in sand dunes and older plants have very long (many metres) tough roots which act to bind the sand. Height was very variable but generally less than 15cm. The plants appeared to have just finished flowering and had dark brown seedheads. I have seen just one other photo on the web which has lighter brown heads which could be flowers (that one was wrongly identified as Juncus Maritimus). The seed head had two very distinctive leaf-like opposite protuberances, with one longer than the other.

Can anyone help me to identify this plant please? Photo attached. Sorry I previously posted this on the wrong forum.

    Thanks

Thank you very much David in LA et al. It is definitely Cyperus capitatus. Quite a feisty little plant.
